>> Confinement in Singapore

As a country on Equator, most traditional confinement concepts do not work in this iland. People should take old concepts with second considerations, below are some general Q&As for Singapore confinement mommies:

- Do not shower for 30 days.
    No way. No shower in Singapore is creating air pollution! 
    Confinement does not mean suffering...
    In the 1st week, you can do some warm water tapping, avoid the wound; 
    From the 2nd week onward, you can start water bath with warm water, avoid bath tub to prevent dirty water enter your body, which could cause infection. For those who are easy to catch cold even in normal days, you could add some herbs water into your warm bath water. 

- No water intake, just take Longan tea, Ginger, black sesame...
    Small amount of above herbal tea is OK, but should avoid over taken, because those heating items will surely cause constipation, rashes, allergy and some other symptoms. For those with insufficient sleep, should strictly avoid those items.

- Completely bed rest for 30 days!
    No way. Confinement bed is not real jail. 
    Again Confinement does not mean suffering... 
    If you could bear it, slight walking around will speed up your wound recovery (for C-delivery) and blood circulation. Just remember do not lift heavy items, as your internal organs are still not well settled and your belly muscles are still loose (if you had some), so you may hurt your back or even result in uterus collapsed in later stage, if you forcibly lift something heavy, even your own baby. 

- Completely in house for 30 days!
    No way. Your house is also not a jail.
    Again, Confinement does not mean suffering..
    should we remember that Fresh air is good for lung (am i idiot enough to mention this?)... You could take some short morning or evening walk to get some gentle sun bath (with your cloth on is enough), as sun light is good in many aspects:
            1: to help you absorb Vitamin D,
            2: to help you adjust your biochronometer, do you have sleep difficulty? if yes, surely you need see the big smiling face of sun. 
            3: to prevent depression. Postnatal depression is quite common; depression is also common in England winter when no sun available, any common factor in these two types of depression, maybe is the rare chance to see smiling sun? 
            4: your hubby also need some attention from you, such walk could be golden time between you two...

- Black sesame chicken, Chicken soup, Chicken everything...
    Come on, please forgive those poor Chickens! Chicken is the cheapest commodity in the market, and it does bring bad effects.
    Nowadays, most chicken are fed in farm, medicines and extra female hermond were fed to chicken to grow their weight/fat fast and away from disease in their 21 days' life. Those strong medicines have cumulated in the chicken's flesh, you are unknowingly eating those medicines and also passed to your baby. So, your baby could be sexually premature and you may wean without realizing the killing factor -- just depends on how bad the chicken you are having...

- Gee, ladoos, Cheese...
    They were good stuff for under-fed old generations, but may not suit for us! Before take any of such items, look into the mirror and see our size first ;)
    If consider adding Calcium, you could take milk or multiple vitamins and Calcium tablets. Gee, laddoos cheese do bring lots of Calcium, but also lots of other stuff, such as fat...

Many concepts used to make sense in ancient days, but now just outdated for our modern life style in this "Hot" Singapore. So, before take advice from Mums, Aunties, neighbors, use your educated brain to apply some basic logic analysis, you will find the life is still very beautiful in Confinements, if you get chance to go out to see some sun light...

Here, confinement should be interpreted in some new aspects:

- To take sufficient sleep and rest, give body time to physically recover; 
    We have been used to late night conference calls, midnight TV programs, or pubs and night outs, confinement should be time to get some healthier life style with better sleeping habit.

- To quickly make up the blood loss in delivery, 
    Delivery lose lots of blood, later breast feeding also directly transform milk from blood, new mommy is in kind of blood crisis in this critical stage, especially for those had unbalanced nutrition or suffers from blood deficiency before delivery; having specially designed herbal soup will quickly recover the blood level and sustain the breast feeding; 

- Take precautions to avoid common diseases: 
    Avoid diarrhea from drinking dirty water, prevent catching cold from strong wind blow or cold water bath,  prevent infection by taking tub bath, avoid reading for long to prevent vision weaken, etc...

- Prepare the breast and body for breast feeding: 
    Some overweight mommies may require clearing the breast glands for a better milk flow (the milk glands have higher chance to be blocked by oily stuff); some mommies may have breast problems due to long term wearing tight shaping bras; some mommies with poor blood circulation (their hand or feed are always cold) will need improve blood circulation to get good milk supply, etc...

- Working mothers could focus on herself and baby, heart absent from own health and baby need may lead to mental pressure and even depression...

- Be confident in confinement and breast feeding:
    Now people tents to have less children, families tent to have smaller size without staying in big joint family. So, in the confinement stage, new mommy will be on her own: husband couldn't help much because no experience, parents or in laws are oversea or busy with their own life. Relax, you can do it, you can it well. Just do a thorough study or preparation before delivery, order good confinement packages before delivery, just focus on your own health and baby, you will be just fine.
